The Lennie Pierro Memorial Foundation Joins Forces With SOMEF

SOMEF Is honored to have been chosen by South Orange's  Pierro Foundation to help them to fulfill their educational objectives. Judy Wukitsch and Cheryl Arnedt of the Pierro Foundation approached SOMEF last spring about directing a portion of their arts education funding toward special projects for children in the South Orange & Maplewood Schools.

Designating $1,000 specifically for arts-related proposals, the Pierro Foundation participated In the funding of two SOMEF Teacher Grants. The two foundations jointly sponsored a grant toward the renovation of the Domareki Art Gallery at Columbia High School, and the remaining $500 from the Pierro Foundation paid for a grant dedicated to educating students about the work of a local artist, the late Tony Smith. The Tony Smith Art Project at Columbia High School will be under the direction of CHS art teacher Larry McKim. Art history students will embark on a study of the work of the acclaimed minimalist sculptor and South Orange native.

ACHIEVE receives Community Grant
from the Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills

March 22, 2007: SOMEF’s ACHIEVE Volunteer Tutor Program has received a $4,280 community grant from the Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills (JLOSH) for the “Math Achievement Gap Program,” a pilot program offering supplemental support to middle school and high school students who are falling behind. Under the ACHIEVE umbrella, certified math consultants will conduct focused math instructional sessions this summer and train volunteer tutors to assist students in strengthening their skills. The “Math Achievement Gap Project,” will offer timely intervention to students who have been identified as having the potential and who are likely to improve significantly with additional instruction and skills reinforcement, but who would not otherwise have access to the required academic support.
This project will identify 30 fifth and sixth grade students in need using NJ ASK and GEPA test scores and other criteria.  These students will be offered five 3-hour math support sessions during the summer followed by follow-up sessions during the subsequent school year.  Planned and directed classes will be led by three math teachers with the support of trained volunteer tutors, resulting in a ratio of approximately 3 adults to 10 students. The program will develop foundational math skills, number sense and flexibility in solving problems.

This is the second grant SOMEF has received from JLOSH. The first one was used to fund “Pebble in the Pond,” a video tool for parents and tutors who are helping young children as they learn to read.

The Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills was founded in 1913 to serve the communities of East Orange, Livingston, Maplewood, Millburn, Orange, Short Hills, South Orange, Springfield and West Orange. Its members are committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.  For additional information, please visit www.jlosh.org
