On Tuesday, May 2, 2007 the community came together to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the ACHIEVE Volunteeer Tutor Program at the new South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC). The event, entitled "Each One, Teach One," honored the more than 1,000 adult and teen volunteers who have assisted over 1,800 students in grades K-12 of the School District of South Orange and Maplewood since 1997.
The sold-out evening raised over $32,000.
Dr. Lovie Lilly, Acting Principal of Columbia High School, presided over the program as ACHIEVE's history and purpose were shared with the audience, a CHS student documentary about ACHIEVE had its premiere screening, CHS Tutors spoke about their experiences, a "lifetime ACHIEVEment Award" was presented to ACHIEVE benefactor, David Noah Dubrow, and the CHS Chamber Orchestra played a selection. Special thanks to CHS Staff Anthony Campiglia, Jon Fisher, Tom Jeron and Todd Van Beveren. Aperitifs by the Wine Emporium were sipped as we made our way to the reception, catered by David Ellis Catering, in the “Loft” on SOPAC's third floor, which provided the perfect setting to view a juried photo exhibit by CHS Photography students.
We had two goals in mind as we planned this celebration over the past year – to raise money to support the program and to raise the community’s awareness of the service provided as the need for additional tutors grows every year. Planning this event has been a true labor of love for all of the volunteers involved. Their generosity, professionalism and caring are a testament to what we can accomplish in our schools and our community when we agree on a goal and put our support behind the effort. The evening showcased the best we have to offer and truly exemplified the theme of the evening: “Each One, Teach One”.
